Headings in Essays and Research Papers: A Clear Guide
Use headings when a piece is long or has clear sections, like a report or dissertation. Short essays often use none at all. When you do use them, keep the levels consistent and format them to your referencing style.
When to use headings, and when not to
- Use them in reports, dissertations and long assignments with distinct sections.
- Usually skip them in short essays that flow as one continuous argument.
Always follow the brief. If the marker wants no headings, do not add them, even if they would help you. For longer work, see how to structure a dissertation and how to structure an assignment.
Heading levels
Think in levels. Level 1 is a main section, level 2 is a subsection inside it, level 3 is a sub point inside that. Keep the hierarchy logical and do not skip levels, so you never jump from a level 1 straight to a level 3.
How styles format headings
- APA: five heading levels with set formatting, such as a centred bold level 1 and a left aligned bold level 2. Check the current edition for the exact rules.
- MLA: no formal heading system. If you use headings, keep them short and consistent, and number them if it helps.
- Harvard: varies by institution. Usually bold, left aligned and consistent. Follow your department version.
- Chicago: does not prescribe headings tightly, so keep levels consistent. It is now in its 18th edition.
Styles update their editions, so check your department guide. The referencing styles explained post covers which style goes with which subject.
Make headings work for readers and search
- Use clear, descriptive wording rather than one word labels.
- Keep them parallel in style, for example all noun phrases or all questions.
- Use your word processor built in heading styles, so the contents page and navigation build themselves.
Before you submit
Numbered or unnumbered, pick one and be consistent. Make sure the heading style matches the referencing style you were told to use.
Before you submit, run your draft through Plag Check for a Turnitin similarity and AI report in about 15 minutes. Your draft is not stored in Turnitin’s database, so it will not come back as a match when you hand in.
Not sure where your draft stands? Upload it with your brief and rubric to Grade Predictor and see your likely grade before you submit. The first two predictions are free and you do not need a card. Your uploads are deleted after the prediction.

Short essays usually do not. Reports and dissertations usually do. The brief decides it.
How many heading levels should I use?
Usually two or three. If you need more, the piece may be over divided.
Should headings be numbered?
It depends on the style and the brief. Reports are often numbered, essays often are not.
How do I format headings in APA?
APA uses five levels, each with its own formatting. Check the current edition and your department guide for the exact rules.
